Pilates and Golf

If you're looking for ways to improve your golf game, you may want to consider incorporating Pilates into your fitness routine. Pilates focuses on developing core strength, flexibility, and balance, all of which are essential for golfers.

4 Ways Pilates can help improve your golf game

1. Develops Core Strength

One of the primary benefits of Pilates is that it helps develop your core strength. A strong core is essential for golfers as it provides stability and power during the golf swing. Pilates exercises such as the stomach series  and the hundred are great for developing core strength.

2. Improves Flexibility

Flexibility is another critical component of a good golf swing. Tight muscles can restrict your range of motion and lead to swing faults. Pilates exercises such as the spine stretch forward, the saw  and spine twist can help improve your flexibility and increase your range of motion.

3. Improves  Balance and Coordination

What’s critical to the golf swing is balance and coordination. In Pilates one of the important things we focus on is stability or control. Without stability, balance and coordination are compromised and as a result, your swing will be too.  Some of the exercises  we use to improve, reinforce and challenge  stability, balance and coordination are shoulder bridge in the matwork, going up front on the high chair for balance and the coordination on the reformer where you coordinate breathing with movement.

4. Helps Prevent Injuries

Golf can be tough on the body, especially the lower back. Pilates exercises can help prevent injuries by strengthening the muscles that support the spine and improving flexibility. Pilates also emphasizes proper alignment, which can help prevent common golf injuries such as golfer's elbow and shoulder impingement.

5. Increases Endurance/ Stamina

With Pilates we are working on improving the quality of the movement and how efficiently we move from a place of equilibrium. When we are  moving or playing golf with a body whose muscles are working evenly or symmetrically, the body has more energy and stamina as a result.
